A recent Review (April 2010)on Cranial Osteopathy for Pregnancy

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Recently a previous pregnant patient returned to me for further treatment, because she wanted to have the European School of Osteopathy approach to pregnancy. As a result of recent controversial news on various therapist, she has asked me to publish her review, to reassure other prospective pregnant patients that cranial osteopathy is safe. See further down.

Cranial osteopaths should be registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

I was trained at the European School of Osteopathy in Cranial Osteopathy before it become a postgraduate sub-speciality. We had small classes and our lecturers included Upledger, an internationally renowned osteopathic physician, recognised in particular for his development of CranioSacral therapy.

Review

I first visited Helen about 3 years ago. My osteo was unavailable and I couldnt find anyone with a genuine and traditional approach that I was used to. I was pregnant with my second child and my sacrum was displaced when I was driving. I couldnt walk. Helen saw me straight away, fitting me in for a good hour! It took 3 sessions and I was pain free and had a wonderful birth. Now on my third pregnancy, I am living in London and saw a shockingly bad cranial osteopath who had a bad manner and poor practice, rendering me worse than I went in. I knew I had to see Helen again. So I did, she gave me immediate attention and was lovely to see her again, (even if it was due to these circumstances!!!) I am again pain free after 3 treatments and so happy. Helens healing hands with cranial are amazing. Her approach to her work is outstanding and to her clients. She is truly brilliant.‎

Strategies to Reduce that Troublesome Prolonged Sitting

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Taking care of your back involves some effort, but it’s worth it. Ten years or so of sitting (not necessarily non-stop!), can result in stiffness and pain. I’ve attended
lectures on the subject from Professor Stuart McGill – check out his website for tips. and website.

In his book on Low Back Disorders, Professor McGill recommends using an ergonomic chair, pointing out that such a chair must be used properly. Changing posture as frequently as every ten minutes, allows the tissue loads to migrate, thereby minimising the risk of any single tissue`s accumalating microtrauma. Even if you don’t get up from your chair, moving position or even just fidgetting can help.

I have a copy with the relevant page open on my desk here – you can read it for yourself.

Sleep Soundly – wake up refreshed – Great Bed Care tips

Monday, April 26th, 2010

In an earlier blog I mentioned how delighted I was with my Blindcraft Great King Sized Bed with its sprung base – ordered direct from their Blindcraft factory at the wonderful price of £750 (including delivery). I ordered two singles beds which can be locked together. This avoids the need to turn a giant double mattress over every 4 months, a difficult and back- risking thing to have to do.
Here is the website for BlindCraft Beds Website..

Other aids to a good night’s sleep are a mattress overlay, highly desirable for anyone with aching arthritic joints, especially if hip or spine discomfort is a problem. Again it need not cost a fortune, with a choice of the more expensive ones to the cheaper foam variety. Check this out on:

Can Massage and Manual Therapy Irritate

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

More and more, therapists are becoming aware of how easy it is to irritate hypersensitive or muscles in severe spasm.

That is why electrotherapy is so beneficial to post-operative ligaments, tendon and severe muscular spasm. This treatment doesn’t carry the risk of irritation that manual therapy does. Used at the wrong time, manual therapy can increase the oedema (fluid retention), irritate the muscle spasm and aggravate angry nerves

More about this another time.

Delighted – the tens machine gives fantastic self care pain relief

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

A combination of a tens machine, electrotherapy, physiotherapy, cranial and traditional manipulative osteopathy has at last been extremely beneficial to one patient with a chronic condition, whom I’ve been treating for four years. Pain relief at last. I don’t charge extra for this combination of electrotherapy, cranial, rehabilitation exercises massage and general osteopathy. It remains at £35.00 a session.

The GP has arranged for an MRI scan for this patient who has been experiencing serious and persistent nerve pain. I am delighted, however, that the Tens is reducing this pain.

The price of tens machines has reduced significantly over the past few years. The machine I supplied cost £35.00. It is small, neat and easy to use.

Because the MRI scan has been organised, there’ll be no need for a private x-ray.

So it is possible to keep the costs down with thought and real care and putting the interests of the patient first.

Cranial Osteopathy for Babies

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

I have treating babies for over twenty years with cranial ostepathy. Cranial Osteopathy for babies and children has become increasing popular. I gave a cranial treatment to a 6 week old baby today. I will give a brief outline to my own unique approach which has made treating babies a delight. I used to rock and treat a crying baby, walking up and down the room which was truly exhausting. When I trained with the British Exercises and Sports Medicine Courses 10 years ago on Core Stability and Pilates Rehabilitation, I bought several large swiss Balls.

The Pilaties Swiss ball is magic for sitting on. If I put a large foam retangular pillow on my knees I can sit on the ball with the baby on the pillow and by keeping a steady rocking bounce, apply cranial osteopathy. It’s bliss for the baby, easy on my arms and back, a relief for the parents as they are reassured to see their baby enjoying the treatment. Parents are also relieved to see their baby responding quickly and needing fewer treatment sessions.

Often the parent has a swiss ball which they can use at home. A difficult to manage baby is very exhausting and the swiss ball rocking for distressed babies seems such a simple solution.

Top tips: Try to keep that spine as straight as possible. Bend from the knee, hips joints or buy those knee pads. This should reduce troublesome back pain.

Confusion – which therapist to choose

Friday, April 9th, 2010

When I trained to be an osteopath over 25 years ago at the European School of Osteopathy, we learned about cranial osteopathy as well as traditional osteopathy. The classes were small and we had brilliant lecturers. Thanks to all of them

20 years on there are many therapists of all descriptions, making all kinds of offers and deals.

It’s advisable to check out genuine professional reviews of any practitioner you’re considering contacting. Word of mouth is also a good guide. Many osteopaths keep their fees very reasonable and give you an appointment time of at least 40 minutes. In my practice, the average number a times a patient visits me is usually 2 or 3, depending on their age and life style. Sport injuries – as any sports physician will explain – may necessitate lengthier treatment as tendons, ligaments and bones can be very tricky, slow healers.

France offers the most amazing health care in the world as one of my French patients told me. The French health care rehabiliation programmes include heated walking swimming pools.

Much of recovery is about self-care and requires self- motivation. There are enough gyms and swimming pools in Edinburgh to enable this, and it shouldn’t cost too much.

Cranial Osteopathy Safe for Pregnancy

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

A pregnant patient has returned to me for 2 or 3 treatments as she found my previous sessions so beneficial while pregnant. She asked me how cranial osteopathy works for low back pain during pregancy. The sacral release is most likely working now only on the so called cranial rythmn but more importantly on the muscles, tendons and ligaments as you work to take the torsion, shear forces out of the lumbar sacral joints. In some way it is easier working with a pregnant lady with cranial osteopathy as the responses should be fast and effectively. If you are lucky, often only 2 or 3 sessions brings about pain relief. If not then you need to look for other causes of pain which may have been overlooked.

As for cranial osteopathy for babies, over 25 years I’ve developed a gorgeous gentle rocking approach which calms both the baby and parents. More later ……
