Cranial Osteopathy – the gentle art of Osteopathy

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Cranial osteopathy is the most gentle of all the approaches. I have used this since graduating from the European School of Osteopathy many years ago. It is well known for helping to settle babies who have been through a traumatic birth. A distressed crying baby causes much heartache.

The first time I really saw the beneficial effects of stress relief was treating a new born baby boy who was endlessly crying. There was no underlying medical condition. To my pleasure, on his first session he relaxed and beamed at his parents. It was only for two or three minutes but it was a start, allowing the bonding process between him and his mother to be established.

Cranial osteopathy is the subject of much debate among osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists. There are some who believe in its benefits and others who are not so sure. This approach is suitable for many patients who are in too much pain and spasm for traditional manipulations, and for those whose medical problems contraindicate normal osteopathy. Cranial osteopathy, with its safe and gentle approaches, can ease some of the soft tissues and joint, enabling the body to repair and recover.

More later about the possibilities.

Did you know that men as well as women get osteoporosis? Smoking greatly increases the risk of osteoporosis. Present current research guidelines being reviewed by NICE (National Institue for Clinical Excellence) would suggest that most women of advancing age or when breast feeding should take calcium and Vitamin D3. Vitamin D is needed to allow calcium to be absorbed from the gut and deficiency can lead to low calcium levels and subsequent weakening of the bone (osteoporosis).

There are pages and pages written about pain relief as the human body is a highly complicated system. A team effort is required, and osteopaths are part the Health Care Team System. Sharing your experiences, reading and researching is advisable as each person has their own story to tell. Finding a pathway to keep comfortable and as pain-free as possible is an interesting challenge for us all.
